Checkered White

We’re having a great butterfly season! Mostly, whenever I see any butterfly, that’s my favorite. Marine blue are my favorite, giant swallowtails are my favorites, skippers are definitely my favorites, and checkered whites are definitely my favorite.

For some reason, I think of them as being exotic and rare, although they’re actually quite common in the desert garden.

They’re a medium-sized butterfly, with a fondness for yellow composite flowers.

I think what I love most about them are the ways that their white wings spread, so bright above the garden, and then when they land, the black spots are so distinct.
